Twenty-Two in España
I turned 22 in Spain! My day started with a trip to the modern art museum, Es Baluard. The afternoon was spent at the beach, and we went out for dinner!
This morning I walked to Es Baluard, a modern art museum here in Palma. It's built into a 16th century building very near the coast. The museum is made up of three floors, each with different exhibits.
The basement housed some really creepy, dark, cinematic art. It was fascinating but unnerving. The kind of thing you can't look away from even though you'd like to.
Both the first and second floors held a mixture of old and new art. I saw paintings and sketches from as far back at the late 1800s. And mixed right in with them were pieces ranging from the early 1900s to present day. There was pottery made by Pablo Picasso. A famous Spanish artist, Joan Miró had lots of art hanging in the museum. I saw videos, movies, mixed media sculptures, paintings, sketches, comics, you name it!
My favorite piece was a large paint brush that had been made out of metal and wood and designed to look like an apartment building. If only I was able to take pictures..
Upstairs, there was a ramp that lead outside to the observatory. I was able to take pictures here! The walkway up on the balcony was made of wooden planks, and there was a tower on the corner that I got to peek out of.
The third photo is of the view out the watchtower window. I had an amazing view of the coastline and all the boats in the port!
On the way home from the museum I saw some impressive street art.
I saw some funny graffiti too. The Simpsons are everywhere.
In the afternoon, Heather and I went to the beach. It wasn't a sandy beach but rather a rocky one. The coastline was lush and green. There were houses all along the coast on one side of the cove we were in.
We climbed down the rocks onto a ledge above the water. People were sunbathing up there, and there were a couple ways to climb down into the water.
Heather and I laid out our towels on the rock and then made our way down to the water. I saw a little brown crab scurrying across the rocks as we climbed into the bluest water you could dream of. The sea was bright blue with darker places that had more sea grass growing in them. The Mediterranean is really salty and buoyant, so we practically floated among the waves.
The cove we were swimming in was full of yachts. People were jumping off boats into the water, paddle boarding, riding jet skis, and even sailing.
Swimming topless is a common thing in Spain, but several people were au natural for their swim in the sea. I saw many naked old men on my birthday... but the water was great!
For dinner, we headed back to the water on a different bit of coastline. Heather, Dolo and I ate at a restaurant called The Bungalow. It's right on the water and we were fortunate enough to get a table on the patio. The view of the coastline was beautiful.
We ate pickled anchovies, roasted peppers, fried squid and paella (a Spanish rice dish with seafood and meat). For dessert, we had Gató con helado. It's like a spice cake with ice cream on the side. It was a great end to a fantastic birthday dinner.
After dinner, we couldnt help but walk over the beach (this one was sandy) and put our toes in the cold sand. We walked down the beach in the moonlight and the sea kissed us with a cool breeze. It was my best birthday yet, and I'm so very grateful for everyone who made this possible for me. I'm very thankful for all of you who wished me a happy birthday from abroad today! My 22nd birthday was very special.
